Walking Plus is the only locally based walking tour operator on the Cycladic islands. The company was founded in 2002 by husband-and-wife team Gilly and Robin Cameron-Cooper. They have a hands-on approach, leading most of the guided walks themselves, and researching and writing the self-guided programme.
Robin’s first career was in the army, where extensive travel and specialist training developed his navigation, survival and leadership skills. His second career, in advertising, led ultimately to Greece, where he managed international business for the country’s leading agency.
Gilly worked as a journalist before becoming an author/contributing editor of illustrated reference books, focusing particularly on ancient history and mythology, natural history and travel. While living in Greece, she produced a weekly magazine covering aspects of Greek culture and travel, and wrote articles for the Athens News and The Athenian magazine. Recently published books include several children’s books on mythology, Walking London’s Docks, Rivers & Canals, and, in March 07, Beatrix Potter’s Lake District, and carious newspaper articles (see PRESS REVIEWS).
Between them, Gilly and Robin speak Greek, French and German.
They aim is to provide the balance of great walking, insight into local culture and wildlife, and relaxation and comfort at the end of the day, that they themselves look for on a holiday. They have explored the mainland of Greece and many of the islands, and have bought a home on Naxos in the heart of the Cyclades. An old friend and experienced guide Charlie Merlin leads the Tinos holidays. Charlie is Greek-Austrian, and speaks Greek, German and English fluently.
